Externship Project

I will be doing my externship even closer to the Quebec border than where I am from originally. I will be living with my roommate from undergrad in Vankleek Hill and doing my externship placement at not one, but two clinics - Vankleek Hill Veterinary Services (large animal) and Hawkesbury Animal Hospital (small animal). I have ridden along with the large animal vets and look forward to what this summer holds. In the couple of times I went out I got to see; dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses, a pony, a donkey, and sheep!

Being on the Quebec border, I also look forward to improving my very rusty French skills. I know some basic medical terms but I'm not quite sure how to explain a spay en Francais. I think that the project will offer good insight into working in a very rural location where communication can sometimes be an issue.

Before I start my externship this summer I will be participating in two 2-week rotations at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center. I’ve already done one week in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and it has been such a learning experience, but also a ton of work, with 16-hour days when something exciting happens – like a birth! Hopefully these rotations will give me some extra large animal skills, and will also explain to you why I'm starting my externship smack dab in the middle of June (instead of the beginning of either May or July).

Au plaisir de vous voir en juin! See you in June!
